In honor of Black History Month, my class made a mini book of May Jemeson. Four little pages that are appropriate for their age:
"Mae was the first black woman in space." and they color a space shuttle in space
"She is a doctor too." they color a picture of Mae with a stethescope and a patient
"Mae won lots of awards" they show trophies and certificates
In hindsight,
I really should've put her picture up on the presentation station while I was talking about her, kinders need visuals.
Guess how many children colored Dr. Jem BLACK? Like, the actual color BLACK? She looked like a halloween costume in her orange NASA suit!
One kid exclaimed, "Oh! She's not black! She's brown! Like me!"
Oh, the simpler days.
